Summary
Marta Cohen and Irene Scheimberg, pediatric pathologists of international repute, have recruited a distinguished panel of authors for this book. Their assignment is to provide general pathologists with up-to-date information on perinatal and pediatric pathology. As a manual, it emphasizes techniques for examining pediatric postmortem and surgical specimens, including histopathology. But this is much more than a procedure manual. The book is brim full of current information about common and obscure pediatric disease.
Chapter by chapter, the assembled experts have laid out detailed approaches to perinatal and pediatric specimens. The descriptions of dissections are so cogent they could well be read aloud to an inexperienced prosector while he or she conducts an examination. Even experienced pediatric pathologists will find techniques and methods that they had not considered or, perhaps, not even known.
In a volume of 436 pages, the authors have wisely emphasized the approach to specific problem areas. These include immature fetuses and infants, growth restriction, excessive body growth, sudden unexpected death in early life, pediatric infectious diseases, problems related to pediatric intensive care, etc. Pertinent information is provided on pathologic anatomy, histopathology, chemistry, microbiology, and molecular genetics. An entire chapter on pediatric radiology is a feature not usually found in pathology textbooks. Still another special chapter deals with perinatal and pediatric forensic pathology.
Photographs of actual dissections provide exquisite detail that complements the text. Other color illustrations add appreciably to both the appeal and the teaching value of the book. Tables with classifications and algorithms enhance the information in each chapter. And the relatively brief reference lists are a pleasant departure from the massive multipage bibliographies found in most modern textbooks of pediatric pathology.

Clacton-on-Sea is a coastal town in the County of Essex, England. It is 75 km northeast of London, 18 km southeast of Colchester (fig. 1). The archaeological site which is the subject of this report comes within Clacton Urban District (civil parish of Great Clacton) although associated earlier discoveries extend to Jaywick Sands, and in the opposite direction, northward, to Holland-on-Sea, both in the same Urban District. The National Grid Reference for the site is TM 157134.
The Pleistocene deposits at Clacton have attracted attention since the first half of the nineteenth century when John Brown of Stanway collected mammalian remains from the foreshore (Brown 1838, 1840). Flint artifacts first appear to have been recognized at the end of the century (Kenworthy 1898). Hazzledine Warren watched exposures between Clacton Pier and Lion Point from about 1910 to 1950, and collected the large quantity of artifacts and faunal remains now in the British Museum. His many papers give much of the history and details of the site and surrounding area (especially Warren 1922, 1923, 1924, 1951, 1955). The only previous controlled archaeological examination in the Clacton area was conducted by Dr K. Oakley and Mrs M. Leakey in 1934 on behalf of the British Association, and their report was published in volume 3 of these Proceedings (Oakley and Leakey 1937). More recently, pollen data relating to these excavated deposits have been obtained from boreholes behind the cliff on West Marine Parade and the foreshore (Pike and Godwin 1953; Turner and Kerney 1971).

When a field of study begins to develop more rigorous methods, well-defined concepts, and greater emphasis on systematic comparison, it is well on the way to becoming a science. In the past decade or so, these traits have become increasingly evident in the study of comparative politics and international politics. But the development of sharper methodology and conceptual sophistication on the part of individual researchers is not quite sufficient. One of the earmarks of a healthy scientific discipline is the extent to which each set of findings may be compared to and combined with the results of earlier investigations; in short, research must become cumulative. Certain obstacles still inhibit us, among which might be counted: disagreement as to the precise boundaries of comparative and international politics; highly disparate theoretical frameworks; lack of consensus regarding the specification and measurement of key variables; and insufficient data storage and retrieval arrangements. Another difficulty has been in the absence of a generally agreed delineation of our empirical domains: What are the political entities whose attributes and relationships must concern us? More simply, we have not yet defined our population, and until the population is defined, we know neither the domain about which we seek to generalize, nor the criteria for selecting a sample from that population.
Although this is hardly the most pressing issue facing our two fields, and while a successful delineation of our population is far from a sufficient condition for the growth of a scientific discipline, it does strike us as a necessary precondition.
